I was born in Brooklyn (like everybody), but I served in the Israeli army; my first reserve duty was the Six-Day War. My father was a Palestinian--born in Poland, emigrated to Palestine when he was three years old, in 1920. I inherited a deep love of Israel from him. I hate the stream of lies I read and hear daily about Israel. I love Israel's people--all of them. [Contact me: joel dot orr at gmail dot com]

Time to wake up!
Friends, Israel is in desperate need. Please think about what specific actions you can take to help Israel. There are many possibilities: Send money; send email encouraging people who live there; go and volunteer; move as an oleh to Israel. I'm sure there are others I haven't thought of. But please do something - while you can!
If you can't think of anything, write me and I will make suggestions.

Still Crazy After All These Years
Naomi Ragen has circulated this Weekly Standard article - Still Crazy After All These Years - and is encouraging us all to boycott anyone who advertises on CNN. I like that.
Speak for yourself, Israel!
This Arutz 7 article makes a powerful point: A few months ago, I met Brad Turrel, a senior CNN executive, at a parlor meeting in North Hollywood, California. After exchanging a few pleasantries, I told him that most Israelis felt that CNN was presenting an anti-Israel bias in its middle-east reporting.
He retorted, “ Did you ever pay attention to the material that appears in the Israeli media? Our reporters take these views as representing the Israeli position. We then hear what the Palestinians have to say, and reach the conclusion that the truth is somewhere in between. Get your own media to be more pro-Israeli and CNN will report accordingly.”

PA Condemns in English, Justifies in Arabic
Israel Radio is reporting that the PA has "condemned" today's attack, and the PA's Saeb Erekat said as much to CNN this morning. Michael Widlanski of The Media Line reports that in Arabic, however, the picture is a different one. The PA's Voice of Palestine radio justified the attack, noting in this morning's report, "It appears that most of the people on the bus were colonists from the colony of Gilo which was built on land taken from our people in Bethlehem." Widlanski also noted that there was no condemnation of the attack in the Arabic media. See "www.themedialine.org"

Who said this, and when?
“For many years the West has made the error of thinking Arab friendship can be gained by political appeasement with economic and military gifts and loans. This glaring fallacy has been exposed on many occasions but the policy persists... No amount of appeasement will make any Arab State love us; they hate us; but worse, they despise us. We should not mind hatred, but we can make them respect us”.

Bret Stephens interviews Charles Krauthammer
In a JPOST column, A Pen in Defense of Zion, Stephens asks good questions. Example: Is Europe truly anti-Semitic? CK: "There are dozens of oppressed people around the world. There are dozens of claimants to statehood who don't have it. Thousands died in Rwanda; who knows how many died in the Congo. Europe doesn't shed a tear over any of them. And yet Europe is passionate about the Palestinians.
"Now this is either one of the greatest coincidences in the history of compassion or it's related to a single fact: The Palestinians are the only ones of these so-called perceived oppressed whose enemies are the Jews. I don't subscribe to the coincidence idea. The fact that this unbelievable passion has been attached to the Palestinians has, without question, its roots in anti-Semitism. No other explanation."

EU adds to list of terrorist organizations
In this Ha'aretz piece we learn that, although they cannot believe their money would actually be used by Arafat for terror, and they dismiss Israeli proofs to that effect, they are adding Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade and the PFLP to their list of terrorists.
What does this really mean? That even these overtly rabid Jew-haters have difficulty with TOO big a "Big Lie," not that they suddenly have become concerned about truth.

Schweitzer's proposal
Dwight Owen Schweitzer lists 18 points, truths that must be acknowledged. As he points out himself, there's enough in there to make everyone mad at him. (The one that hit my hot button: giving even a piece of Jerusalem to the "Palestinians.")
But such objections aside, this is by far the best starting place I have seen for a sane proposal.
On the other hand, I think it has a snowball's chance in Hell of being entertained for more than three seconds by the other side. Nonetheless, it could serve as a rallying point for our highly-fragmented team, and yet another demonstration to the world of our reasonableness.
And on the third hand, though I hate to admit it--it won't make a bit of difference to the world, who hates Jews for being Jews.
Sigh.

Eyal and Yael Sorek, 23 and 21, and their almost-born baby were murdered yesterday in Karmei Tzur.
How long will we tolerate this horror? What has to happen before we put a stop to this desecration of all we hold holy? So far, our clear message to Arafat and all his Jew-hating friends is that terror accomplishes their ends, and we will make only token responses.
Why do we keep acting as though the Arabs share our values? THEY DON'T!

Going by the secular calendar, yesterday was the 35th anniversary of the start of the Six-Day War. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the day Jerusalem came back into Jewish hands.
We - Israel - won that war. Our enemies had declared their intention, as usual, to push us into the sea, to dance in our blood, etc. We begged Jordan's King Hussein not to join our other enemies; he turned us down, probably more afraid of what his "allies" would do to him if he didn't, then of the consequences of losing to Israel.
Sure enough, he lost his "west bank" - our Judea and Samaria - including Jerusalem. Oddly, neither he nor his son have asked for it back. I guess they must be thinking, "Let those Jews keep the land and all those 'refugee Palestinians.' Arafat and his crazies are more trouble to us than the land is worth!"
I've really been trying to understand the Moslem point of view. Yesterday, at a technical conference, I met a Canadian/Egyption who was willing to talk openly with me. "I think I know what Israel ought to do, but you won't like it," he said. "Try me," I answered.
"I think Israel should have annexed all the lands it won, and simply made all their residents Israeli citizens. I think it would have worked better had they done it in 1967, but it's still not too late," he said. That's one I hadn't heard from an Arab.
Could it work? In 1967, I think it might have. But now, with generations of inbred hatred, I don't know if it could happen - unless we deported those who didn't want to swear allegiance to the State of Israel. "Just get them credit cards and a mortgage, and you'll see what great citizens they become," said my cheerful new friend.
I asked him how any good Moslem could countenance living with Jews. "You have to realize that Islam never had anything comparable to a Reformation," he said. "Parts of the Koran say one thing about relations with Jews and Christians, while other parts say something quite different. I think we have to be willing to forsake the bad parts, and keep the profound and universal truths."
I am skeptical about that happening, frankly. But I was warmed by my new friend's optimism. I'm not willing to give up land for peace, but credit ratings? It's a thought...

16 killed in attack on bus by moving car bomb in Megiddo
The Arabs attacked Israel in 1967 on this day, and lost. This is their celebration.
It's time to change assumptions: 1. We've been acting as if the Arabs really want peace, under some conditions. It's time to recognize that the only condition under which they want peace with us involves all of us resting in peace.
2. We've assumed Arafat is a popular leader. Actually, he is - in the same way as a Mafia don. Arabs fear him; that's why they don't resist.
3. We've assumed there is someone with whom we can negotiate on the Arab side. Reality has revealed this to be the most fatal of fantasies. We must act as if we are dealing with a poisonous, headless monster. It must be subdued, as humanely as possible. Period.
Dear Government of Israel, how cheaply do you hold the lives of your citizens? I call on you to change your assumptions and act accordingly. For Jerusalem's sake!

Even after being publicly shamed into accepting Magen David Adom as a "full-fledged member" after more than six decades, the International Red Cross is still doing anything it can to avoid helping Jews.
israelinsider: There are none so blind…
israelinsider: There are none so blind… Once again a suicide bomber kills himself and a number of presumably Israeli civilians, and a glib representative of the Palestinian Authority gets on MSNBC and says he deplores the killing of innocent civilians, be they Israelis or Palestinians. He draws no distinction between his people's being used as human shields by terrorists and some dying as a result of military action to stop the breeders of terror, and the deliberate targeting of civilians by suicide bombers for no other reason that to instill fear in the population of Israel. It is easy to find moral equivalency when you have no morality in the first place.

Sponsor someone to walk around Jerusalem (Psalms 48:12)
Women for Israel's Tomorrow (Women In Green ) in the observance of an ancient custom, will again arrange for the annual Walk around the Walls of the Old City of Jerusalem on Tisha B'Av evening. This year the Event will take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2002.
The Walk commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples which occurred on the same day, 2588 and 1,932 years ago, respectively. Those participating, at the same time, will be praying for the rebuilding of the Third Temple in Jerusalem on the sacred Temple Mount.
Despite the existing Arab terrorist activities, more than 80,000 persons participated in the Walk last year; two years ago, more than 100,000 people took part.
We hope that you are able to come to Jerusalem to personally participate in the Walk. However, even if you are not able to be in Jerusalem for this special Memorial Day on the 9th day of the Hebrew Month of Av, you can participate in this Walk by sponsoring a person to Walk in your behalf.
The minimum amount for sponsoring such a person is $25, but you are urged to contribute beyond that sum at this critical hour for Jerusalem. It is also your personal statement in support of the City of G-d.
Each contributor sponsoring a participant in the Walk, in his or her behalf, will be sent a card that specifies your personal participation or sponsorship in this historical event.
Wherever you are located, you will have the spiritual experience of having walked around the Old City Walls in Holy Jerusalem on Tisha B'Av evening.
Now more than ever we need people who will identify with the Prophet Isaiah who said: "For Jerusalem's sake, I will not be silent."

Hanson on the Mideast on National Review Online
The Abuse of History, like so much of Hanson's writing, explores straightforward observations and intelligently extrapolates from them.
"Distorted and frankly fraudulent"
Arutz Sheva - Israel National News quotes Middle East News Line: "This is how Frank Gaffney, president of the Washington-based Center for Security Policy, describes the recent State Department Report on Terrorism."
2 dead, 53 injured in Petach Tikva
This is the result of setting Arafat free instead of holding him responsible. When will we wake up?
Crimes of War Project
A reader said he had been reluctant to sign my petition asking the US government to declare suicide bombing a "crime against humanity" because he was not sure what the phrase meant. He researched the matter, and found Crimes Of War Project - The Book If you read this, I think you will agree that signing the petition is a good idea.

UPI Analysis: Why Europeans bought Jenin myth
This is a good analysis, and a powerful read. (Frankly, I have come to the conclusion that the answer to the question is simple: The world hates Jews because it hates God, and we are God's people.)
Suicide bombers recruited from terminally ill
From Naomi Ragen:
Friends,
Israeli news Channel Two reported last night that the motivation for suicide bombing was not only "ideological." According to official Israeli sources, Palestinian terrorist recruiters visit terminally ill patients in cancer wards, and two of the suicide bombers in Israel were terminally ill and money was offered to their families. The two women homicide bombers were both divorced and shunned by their families and felt their lives were over anyway. They too were recruited, as a way of bringing "honor" to themselves after disgracing their families. The other bombers were children of very poor families who encouraged the sacrifice of their children as a way of making a buck. They received thousands of dollars, which is why they are encouraging their other sons to do the same.
So the next time someone tells you about the poor, brave, desperate Palestinian that "sacrifices" so much, tell them to read this, and to take a flying leap into reality.

Disregard for Truth in the Media
Israel News : Jerusalem Post Internet Edition reports: "WHEN NINE TIMES as many Israeli dead as Palestinian ones are women, it's awfully hard to believe in allegations of indiscriminate Israeli attacks on Palestinian civilians, to say nothing of an even division of claims on victimhood and blame. It's such a nagging little truth - and so easy to ignore. Then again, as a sage British politician once observed, "nagging is the repitition of unpalatable truths.""
Jpost: Israeli victims don't count at State
This is not an oversight, or a slight. It represents a considered (however absurd it might seem) position on a deadly serious issue. American Jews: If you think this doesn't affect your life, you need to go back and read some Holocaust books.

Ruth Matar in Tidewater, Virginia
I just returned from an evening with Ruth Matar, founder of Women in Green, the down-to-earth movement in support of Israel. It was inspiring to be in her presence! I urge you to check out Women in Green, and get behind it if you can. This is a volunteer organization; nobody takes any money for the wonderful work they do. Visit their Web site, and find a way to participate. Every dollar you invest goes into the work, not into fundraising.

Jihad Defined: Few Americans Know This
Bat Ye'or is an Egyptian living in Switzerland who authored "The Dhimmi," an authoritative description of how Islam regards Jews and Christians ("dhimmi" means roughly "protected ones"). Bat Ye'or address Middle East Forum on the topic of the nature of jihad; here is a summary.
Capitulation Breeds Contempt
Daniel Pipes in the Jerusalem Post: "When Israel retreats before an enemy that seeks its destruction, it is perceived as weak. This in turn emboldens that enemy to step up its attacks. The lesson: Israel should consider pulling out of disputed territories only after having achieved true and permanent acceptance of its existence by its enemies."

WorldNetDaily: The day Arafat was offered power
Joseph Farah comments on Arafat's past:
"What's the lesson here?
"It is one that has been overlooked by history. Arafat will settle for nothing less than all of Israel. There is little point in negotiating with him. Other Arab leaders have learned this first hand – which is why he will never again be allowed to operate on their turf. "

Active vs. Passive Voice
Judean Voice observes: "When reading the newspaper, take a second to notice how the death of Israelis is always described in the passive and the death of Arabs, in the active. That is, a Jewish youngster shot dead by Arabs while sitting at home is: Israeli youth killed as Palestinians infiltrate settlement, but an Arab youth killed while threatening Jewish lives is "Israeli soldiers shoot dead Palestinian boy"."
NO "CLEAR EVIDENCE"?!?
State Department tells Congress there was `no clear evidence' Arafat directed terror attacks. All this means is that the perenially anti-Israel State Department (see "The Secret War Against the Jews," among MANY others) has something horrible up its sleeve.
Netanya Market: (1 killed, 48 injured) Update: 3 killed, 50 injured
This Ha'aretz article reports how Arafat is not attacking Israeli civlilians....As we've noted here, just look at any of the pseudo-military patches of any of Arafat's groups - his own, Tanzim. El-Aksa Martyrs Brigade, Hamas, PFLP, et nauseating al - and you'll see a map of the area whose residents are considered fair game by him and his ghouls. It is all of Israel.
